New Treatment for Obesity Epidemic

New treatment will help address Ireland’s obesity ‘epidemic’

With 39 per cent (more than 1.2 million) of Irish adults overweight and 25 per cent (more than 750,000 people) obese (1), Ireland is threatened by the twin epidemics of obesity and diabetes (2) and faces growing health problems across all age groups, especially younger women - in fact a whole range of obesity-related illnesses threaten us and our children not just now but in the longer term.

To help address this epidemic situation, a new treatment (technically a medical aid/device) for mildly to extremely overweight adults and children from 10 years of age has been announced. Developed by the Dutch vitamins, minerals and supplements company PK Benelux Pharma Care BV, the new treatment Obesimed®, prevents excessive eating behaviour, supports balanced eating habits and can lead to considerable weight loss and related health benefits.

“By taking a fibre, such as Obesimed, the hungry feeling and craving for food simply go.  As a result you eat less and you have taken the first step to weight loss”, says Dr Clare.

“The principle that taking a fibre increases satiety - that is to say, it reduces the sensation of  hunger – is well documented and helpful”, says GP and medical herbalist Dr Dilis Clare.  “It is simple – you eat less because you are not feeling as hungry as usual.  This is true of a fibre-based treatment, such as Obesimed, which is best used as part of a healthy eating regime.  This ‘fibre method’, which is relatively side-effect free, is a safe and straight forward way to treat and manage problems of overweight and obesity – now major national health issues of epidemic proportions in Ireland which threaten not just the quality of our lives but life itself.”

During almost 30 years of practice as a GP and as a medical herbalist for the last 10 years, Dr Clare has dealt with many patients suffering from health problems related to overweight and obesity.

“In addition, as the problems of obesity and overweight continue to grow, the cost of treating these health problems and the related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and hypertension are escalating into multimillions of Euro.  An improved national plan could help prevent illnesses, save lives and also mean huge savings in the health care bill for the exchequer.  A fibre treatment, such as Obesimed, in the battle against obesity and problems of overweight could not be more timely.”

“By taking a fibre, such as Obesimed, the hungry feeling and craving for food simply go.  As a result you eat less and you have taken the first step to weight loss”, says Dr Clare.  “In parallel, the person must embrace key lifestyle actions which will help them manage their weight.

Dr Clare continued, “You must move towards healthier, natural foods and begin to cut out the processed, rubbish junk foods.  You must also take a fresh look at daily exercise.  A 35-40 minute brisk walk is a doable objective, even for someone who is overweight.”

How it works

The active ingredient in Obesimed®, OMTEC 19, is a soluble fibre which absorbs large quantities of water and forms a natural substance filling the stomach.  This produces a feeling of being full and satisfied during the meal and the period afterwards.

“For patients taking oral medications, to avoid any delay in their absorption by the body, drugs  should be taken one hour before or four hours after taking Obesimed”, advises Dr Clare.

Obesimed® reduces the speed at which food leaves the stomach by forming a viscous substance.

It promotes feelings of satisfaction in the stomach.  This gives the person a basis for adopting new, better eating habits which in turn help the individual address problems of mild to extreme overweight.  The substance also helps lower cholesterol levels and gives relief in the case of constipation.

The active ingredient in Obesimed® - a natural fibre - is not absorbed or digested by the body.  It is drug-free, chemical-free and also relatively free of side-effects (flatulence can occur).

The effectiveness of Obesimed®, a class IIa medical device, has been substantiated according to EU Directive 2007/47/ec of the European Parliament and of the Council of September 5, 2007.

Obesimed  is available from leading pharmacies; €19.90 for a 45-capsule pack and €49.90 for 135 capsules.  Check out http://www.mccabespharmacy.com/ for more information.
