A new feature for a new year..
Mairead Robinson introduces her new regular feature on cosmetics, skin and hair
What do Helen Mirren, Joanna Lumley, Jane Fonda and Lulu have in common? They are all over 50, and some are well into their 60s and even 70s. But the most interesting thing about these women is that they are all beautiful.
Despite what Hollywood might say about women being past their best at 35, while men can still look great at 75, the truth is that these women look and are very attractive and full of life with bright eyes and skin, shining hair and smiling faces. And it is not necessary to go under the knife to achieve beauty in later years, science has come a long way in the last couple of decades and there are some really revolutionary products out there these days that can help us to keep that youthful sparkle.
Starting in the New Year, through our regular Senior Beauty column, we will be sifting through all the products and treatments that are available on the market today, and availing of the latest research and development in this area.
It is true that most women over 50 do not buy the correct products for their skin type. After the menopause, the skin structure changes, and there is no point in using products that are designed for a different type of skin. Many of us have made the mistake of simply purchasing “Anti-Wrinkle” creams that are designed as preventatives and are being used now by women in their 20s! What we need are creams and serums specifically for mature skin that will plump up the skin and light reflecting foundations that will lift the skin tone. So look out for products that say ‘Repair’ ‘Regenerate’ or ‘Youth Activate’. The great news is that these products do exist and they to make a difference and they are affordable. L’Oreal and Lancome are leaders in the area of mature skin care with the L’Oreal Age Perfect range, and the revolutionary Genifique serum from Lancome being particularly exciting. Simple carries a very extensive range of good products also. The basic rule of thumb is to use a good serum under an appropriate moisturiser, a good eye cream around the delicate eye area, and a rich moisturiser to re-hydrate the skin at night-time. With Christmas almost upon us, there are some beautiful gift-sets of these products available which make wonderful presents, and don’t forget products for men too!
Over the coming months we will be looking at foundations, eye make-up, hair colours, body treatments and recommending what to use and when so you will not waste your money on inappropriate products. We will also be running competitions and will be happy to answer any queries you may have about looking your best as the years go by. Whether you are attending a wedding, going on a sun-holiday, recovering from an illness or just dealing with the Irish weather on a daily basis, you can always look great. And remember, your most precious beauty secret is your smile!
